When evaluating such sites, it is important to look for the following red flags, which are commonly found with fraudulent online retailers:
- Lack of Verifiable Information: Legitimate businesses provide clear, verifiable contact details, including a physical address, a working customer service phone number, and a transparent history. If a site lacks these, or if the “Contact Us” section provides only a generic email form, it is a major warning sign.
- Too-Good-To-Be-True Pricing: Scammers often lure victims with deep discounts on high-demand, high-value, or specialized items. If the prices seem significantly lower than market value, you should exercise extreme caution.
- Absence of Credible Reviews: If you cannot find independent, third-party reviews (such as on Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, or reputable forums) or if the reviews seem generic and “too perfect,” the site is likely not established or trustworthy.
- Generic Website Templates: Many scam sites are built using common, low-cost templates that look professional at a glance but lack genuine brand identity. Look for inconsistencies in branding, broken links, or “lorem ipsum” placeholder text.
- HTTPS Does Not Equal Safety: As a reminder, the “s” in
https://only indicates that the connection between your browser and the site is encrypted. It does not verify that the company is honest or that they will actually ship the items you purchase.
Recommendations:
- Do not enter your payment information or personal details on this site.
- DO NOT SEND A DEPOSIT
- If you have already provided payment information, contact your bank or credit card company immediately to flag the transaction and consider canceling your card.
- For future online shopping, stick to established retailers with verifiable physical headquarters and a long-standing reputation. If a site is new to you, search the domain name alongside the word “scam” or “reviews” to see if others have reported negative experiences.
